Charles Heigold House Fascade in Louisville

The back side of the ruins of the Charles Heigold house in Louisville, Kentucky. The upstairs balcony door hovers above the first floor entrance like a door to nowhere on this old brick fascade.

On the banks of the Ohio River, Louisville. This is only the front wall of the house, the rest has been demolished. The building, built in 1857 was built by a German Immigrant named Charles Heigold. Heigold built his house at a time of intense anti-immigrant sentiment in the US, so he covered it with patriotic inscriptions and images to show his loyalty to his adopted homeland. "Hail to Buchanan, Now and Forever" is inscribed below the head above the upper door. "Hail to the Union, Never Dissolve It" is inscribed elsewhere. This image is the back of the wall, what would have been the interior of the house.
